Frequency
Grass needs to be fed to maintain health. As it grows it depletes nutrients from the soil. Starting in the Spring through to Fall, lawns can be fertilized every 6-8 weeks.
What is N-P-K:
All bags of lawn fertilizers have 3 numbers listed on the front. These represent the nutrients: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). These numbers fluctuate by brand as well as by season.
Nitrogen (N):
Helps plants grow and green up
Phosphorus (P):
Stimulates deep root development
Potassium (K):
Provides all around vigor and health, disease and drought tolerance
How much coverage do you need?
Canadian lawns come in all different shapes and sizes. Knowing roughly the size of your lawn helps you decide the amount of fertilizer you need. Remember, choose a bag based on coverage, not the bags weight.
Choosing a Spreader:
It’s important to apply lawn fertilizer with a suitable spreader. Applying
a product using a quality spreader ensures even distribution—for even
colour, growth and germination. For a smaller lawn, use a handheld
spreader. For a larger lawn, use a broadcast spreader.

How to Apply:
Look for spreader settings on packaging. You’ll learn how much product is to be applied at the
suggested rate. Remember: applying any lawn product by hand can damage your lawn. Always
follow label directions.
Spring
Feeding in the early spring promotes strong roots, strengthening grass after cold winters.
Summer
Applying in late spring thickens grass blades while preparing your lawn for summer heat and drought.
Fall
Feeding in mid-late fall helps strengthen roots in anticipation of winter.
OR ULTRAFEED™
An all season fertilizer that controls the release of nutrients feeding your lawn for an extended period, saving you time and effort.
Choosing the right fertilizer is important. Each manufacturer produces several fertilizers with different N-P-Ks, each intended for use at different times of the year. There are also added benefits that each manufacturer uses that make some products better suited for your particular lawn.
Good
Contain similar N-P-K to higher-value fertilizers but may not offer the same technology—slow release nitrogen particles, for example.
Better
Offers technologies that provide a consistent coverage of nutrients and feeds evenly over a period of time.
Best
Provide the optimal N-P-K needed for your lawn, along with superior claims to make your lawn greener in less time than
most other products. Some even offer extended feeding times so you can feed your lawn less often.
Specialty
Some fertilizers come with technologies which help kill moss in your lawn, prevent summer drought, help new grass seed grow and prevent the growth of new weeds. Knowing what you want to do with your lawn determines which lawn food is right for you.
